SANSAR is launching its Risk Management Program again in the spring of 2019. This program gives South Asian adults in the Greater Toronto Area an opportunity to attend free group classes that provide education on heart disease and diabetes prevention and management.
We are seeking an experienced Dietitian with a South Asian background to facilitate group education classes. These classes will focus on how to make South Asian cooking healthier and how to make heart-healthy food choices. The classes will be facilitated in English; however, the ability to speak a South Asian language is preferred.
Students will be enrolled through SANSAR’s South Asian Cardiovascular Risk Assessment Clinic, which screens individuals for early detection and prevention of heart disease and diabetes. The classes will take place in the SANSAR office building, at 3 Conestoga Drive in Brampton, Ontario.
Duties and Responsibilities
The Dietitian will be expected to:
Assist in the development and final planning of the class content
Attend 3-4 hours of training and program preparation sessions
Execute and facilitate the classes based on the curriculum created by SANSAR
Create an engaging, supportive and comfortable environment which encourages dialogue and participation from the students (many of whom will be South Asian adults between 40-60 years of age)
This contract is for 52 hours over the course of 12 months: 2 (2-hr) classes per month, for one year 4 hours of training/preparation
Bachelor degree in Food and Nutrition
Member in good standing of the College of Dietitians of Ontario
At least 2 years of experience educating patients, facilitating classes, or leading health promotion initiatives related to diet and heart disease and/or diabetes
At least 2 years of experience working with South Asian patients
Knowledge, skills and abilities:
Solid understanding of the issues and challenges pertaining to the health and wellness of the South Asian population in the Greater Toronto Area
Ability to speak at least one South Asian language
Excellent public speaking and communication skills
Excellent interpersonal and group facilitation skills
