Diabetes is a condition in which your body cannot properly use and store food for energy. South Asians have the highest Type 2 Diabetes prevalence in Canada and their children are at an increased risk. This is because South Asian adolescents have been shown to have a greater insulin resistance and tend to consume greater amounts of carbs as well as engage in less physical activity.
The South Asian Adolescent Diabetes Awareness Program provides South Asian adolescents with a family history of diabetes, the tools and the support they need to make healthy lifestyle changes in their own lives. This new program will offer South Asian adolescents (13-18 years of age) with a family history of type 2 diabetes, an opportunity to attend group classes and individual consults with a Dietician and Personal Trainer.
